Free class in Texarkana: Pocket prairie gardening techniques

TEXARKANA, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) – A university in Texarkana has joined forces with area master gardeners to create a free gardening class in September.

The Bowie County Master Gardeners and Texas A&M-Texarkana collaboration is hosting a program called “Creating Pocket Prairies” on Mon., Sept. 9 at 6 p.m.

The event is open to the public and will take place in room 326 of the University Building.

Rachael Derringer, a Bowie County Master Gardener, will present the program and answer questions after the presentation.

What is a pocket prairie?

A pocket prairie is a small area of land that’s planted with native plants, often in urban and suburban backyards. The little garden pockets create diversity in communities with driveways, sidewalks, and cut grasses.

Pocket prairies provide habitat for native wildlife and food sources for pollinators. They can also attract butterflies and bees.

Those who attend this program at Texas A&M-Texarkana will learn how to plant pocket prairies.

Call the Bowie County Extension Office at (903) 628.6702 or Texas A&M-Texarkana at (903) 334.6752 for more information about the event.
