If you have a passion for nature and a desire to give back to your community, consider becoming a Master Naturalist with the East Texas Chapter. This program offers a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of the natural world while contributing to its preservation. The 2024 training classes begin on Aug. 24 and continue every Saturday through Nov. 9, with a break on Aug. 31. Classes will be held at the Tyler Nature Center, located at 11942 FM 848, Tyler, offering a beautiful and inspiring setting for your studies.
The Master Naturalist program, sponsored by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, aims to educate and train volunteers to provide education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas. As a Master Naturalist, you will join a network of dedicated individuals who share a love for nature and a commitment to conservation.
The training program consists of more than 40 hours of classroom study and field trips. These sessions are designed to enrich your knowledge of the local environment and prepare you for volunteer work. Topics covered include:
Ecology and Ecosystems: Learn about the diverse ecosystems found in East Texas and how they function.
Wildlife Management: Gain insights into managing and conserving local wildlife populations.
Botany and Plant Identification: Discover the native plants of East Texas and their roles in the environment.
Geology and Soil Science: Understand the geological history and soil composition of the region.
Water Resources: Study the importance of water conservation and management in natural habitats.
By joining the Master Naturalist program, you will:
